Weight Gain Powder

In today's health conscious world, it would be hard to find people searching for weight gain powders and supplements, however, there are many who rely on these products. Our lifestyle has evolved and changed leaps and bounds leading to changes in the diet plans and related health problems like vitamin deficiencies. Not only for general weight gain, but these weight gain powders are used over and over by weightlifters and bodybuilders as a part of their workout regime.

When one thinks of a weight gain powder, it should be such so as to provide adequate and satisfactory amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and mainly fats which would result in weight gain. The main principle involved here is weight gain through muscle mass and not body mass. A proper diet supplemented with weight gain powders helps preserve the body mass and not the fats. So let's get into the details of some best weight gain powders and see how effective they have been.

Best Weight Gain Powder
Most of these weight gain powders are precisely made up of protein weight gain supplements like the whey proteins or casein proteins and sometimes, mixture of both along with creatine monohydrate, glutamic acid and maltodextrin as other supplements. Whey protein powders have been seemingly popular due to their faster absorption rate in the body tissues and thus being highly effective for gaining weight in a shorter time span. On the other hand, casein requires longer time to get well absorbed in the body. The protein absorption is different for different individuals and the efficiency of each can be termed as the biological value (BV). In plain words, higher the biological value, faster the absorption of proteins and the resultant weight gain. An alternative to this would be animal protein powders or cooked animal proteins which are amongst the richest sources of proteins which help weight gain. The best weight gain powder fat content should be low though since too much of it is not advisable. Let's take a look at the table depicted below to understand the biological values of these protein powder forms.

Neck Pain and Headaches

Neck pain, in itself, can cause a lot of discomfort. When it is accompanied by headache, then it becomes quite unmanageable. Stiffness and heaviness can be felt in the entire neck area and it makes neck and head movements very difficult. Its intensity often varies from mild to severe, and it may last for just a few hours or may continue for some weeks. If neck pain and headaches bother you persistently, then it can disrupt your normal life activities. You cannot focus on your work at hand.

Neck Pain and Headaches: Causes

The most common cause has been found to be strain or sprain in the neck muscles. These muscles are attached to the base of the skull. As a result, pain in these muscles often get referred to the head and causes headache. The neck muscles have high mobility and they do not get rest throughout the day. So, they suffer strain due to overuse. Injuries may occur during twists and turns of the neck. Traumatic injuries to the head or neck can lead to stiff neck and headache.

If you experience headache and neck pain together, after working for long hours in front of computer, then it is associated with poor posture while sitting. Sleeping in a wrong position can also cause this problem. Mental stress may tense up the muscles in the neck area and give you a headache. It can be a symptom of a serious infectious disease named meningitis. However, in that case, it is accompanied by fever and you will be unable to touch the chest with your chin. Those who are dealing with sinusitis often complain about sore neck and headache. A herniated disc in the cervical spine can exert pressure on the surrounding soft tissues, resulting in chronic neck pain and headaches. Neck arthritis, migraine and fibromyalgia can be other causes of headaches and neck pain.

Neck Pain and Headaches: Treatment

When there is constant headaches and neck pain, then its cause is first diagnosed with the help of laboratory tests like x-rays, MRI, CT scan, etc. Any kind of muscle injury is treated with the help of anti-inflammatory medicines which can bring down the inflammation and ease off the pain. Other suitable medicines are also prescribed for headache cure. Application of ice on the neck can provide a soothing relief from the painful symptoms. A gentle massage of the neck muscles also proves to be useful.

However, pain relieving medicines cannot be taken for a long time as they have adverse side effects on your health. So, as soon as the pain subsides a bit, doctors recommend some neck pain exercises. Such exercises are effective, not just for neck pain but also for headache. There are two different types of neck pain and headaches exercises. One of them is stretching exercises and the other one is the muscle toning exercises. Bend the head on any one side and hold the position for a few seconds. Then repeat the same on the other side. This will stretch the neck muscles and release the stiffness. Rotating the head slowly, from one side to another in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, is a simple exercise that can add strength and flexibility to the neck muscles.

In cases where there is an indication of some underlying health problems, then that has to be treated properly, in order to get relief from neck pain and headache. Sinus infection needs to be treated with antibiotics, decongestants and antihistamines. Meningitis is a serious disease and it requires immediate medical intervention.

Neck pain and headaches is one such problem that you should never neglect, in order to avoid any future complications. It can be prevented, to a large extent, by maintaining good posture while sitting, standing or sleeping and leading a healthy stress free life.

To learn if you have high quantities of nitrates you can obtain an inexpensive test kit at the local hardware store. When you find large amounts of nitrates in your drinking water you can either start consuming bottled water or better yet, use a filter to remove them from your drinking water.

Nitrates are present in a great number of types of food, but chiefly in cured meats such as hot dogs, ham, salami, bacon, and others. Simply put, this indicates if you see large amounts of nitrates in your drinking water and then filter the water, you might still get migraines due to the nitrates in your food. Sex Drive Link To Prostate Cancer

Men who are more sexually active in their 20s and 30s may run a higher risk of prostate cancer, research suggests.
The Nottingham University study quizzed 800 men on how often they had sex or masturbated. Those who were most active while younger had more chance of developing cancer later in life. The researchers said higher levels of sex hormones could lead to a bigger sex drive and the cancer, the journal BJU International reported. Hormones appear to play a key role in prostate cancer Dr Polyxeni Dimitropoulou Study leader Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with well over 30,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It affects the prostate gland, which is found close to the bladder and makes a component of semen. The Nottingham team, led by Dr Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, recruited more than 400 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, then compared their answers to 409 men thought to be free of the disease. As well as questions about how often they had been sexually active from puberty onwards, they were asked how many sexual partners they had had and whether they had been diagnosed with any sexual infections. Roughly the same proportion of both groups, 59%, said they had engaged in sexual activity 12 times a month or more in their 20s, falling to 48% in their 30s, 28% in their 40s and 13% in their 50s. Almost two-fifths of the prostate cancer group had had six female partners or more, compared with less than a third of the non-cancer group. Frequency risk There was also a difference among the men who masturbated or had sex the most often, with 40% of men in the cancer group being sexually active 20 times a month or more in their 20s, compared with 32% in the non-cancer group. The gap between the two groups narrowed as the men aged, suggesting that the difference was strongest at a younger age. Dr Dimitropoulou said: "What makes our study stand out from previous research is that we focused on a younger age group than normal and included both intercourse and masturbation at various stages in the participants' lives." He said that it was possible that higher levels of sex hormones in some men were both responsible for a high sex drive in their 20s and 30s, and for the development of prostate cancer later on. "Hormones appear to play a key role in prostate cancer and it is very common to treat men with therapy to reduce the hormones thought to stimulate the cancer cells." She said that the reasons why the connection between sexual activity and prostate risk appeared to diminish with advancing age was not clear, although other studies have suggested that sexual activity releases toxins from the gland. John Neate, chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said that while the study was useful, its findings would need to be backed by more evidence before they could be accepted He said: "The role of sexual activity is becoming an increasing focus for prostate cancer research but unfortunately this study does little to offer any practical advice to men wishing to reduce their risk of the disease. "The study is retrospective, and asks men to complete a questionnaire about their sexual history. "However, in relying on men to recall information from 20 or 30 years previously, it is likely that there will be some inaccuracy in the data collected as men either consciously or unconsciously forget some detail which could compromise their findings. "The sample used in the study is also relatively small, making it difficult to draw any universal conclusions."

Anaphylactic Shock

The sudden death of champion hurdler Ross Baillie has highlighted the dangers faced by those suffering from extreme allergies. BBC News Online examines "Anaphylactic Shock", the name for any life-threatening reaction to a seemingly innocent substance.

Anaphylactic shock is an extreme form of allergic reaction to a particular substance, and is often life threatening.

In effect, the body's immune system, which is there to tackle substances or organisms which are a threat, such as bacteria or viruses, decides that something harmless poses a great danger, and launches a massive overreaction

In extreme cases, large quantities of an antibody called immunoglobin E are produced, which cause a variety of effects on the body's cells and tissues.

In particular, it causes the body to release an excess amount of histamine, a dangerous chemical.

The resultant, and usually very swift, effects are muscle contractions and swelling, often closing the throat, making it difficult to breathe.

Sufferers may also experience abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Immunoglobin E expands blood vessels, causing a drop in blood pressure, which leads to fainting or unconsciousness.

The most visible signs are often swelling and rashes on the skin, or on the lips and tongue if it is a food allergy.

Bites, stings, and jabs

A variety of substances can trigger this massive immune response.

Among them are insect bites or stings, food - commonly nuts, drugs like morphine or the dye injected prior to X-raying. The horse serum used in the makeup of some vaccines can also cause anaphylactic shock.

Many people suffer severe allergic reactions to certain items, such as pet fur or pollen, but these symptoms are rarely life-threatening, and can normally be treated with anti-histamines - a treatment which reduces the amount of dangerous histamine in the body.

However, these treatments take up to an hour to reach the bloodstream, and true anaphylactic shock requires immediate treatment with adrenaline injection.

Hormone makes body 'fight'

Adrenaline is the "fight or flight" hormone, which is released naturally when the body is in a stressful or dangerous situation.

It makes the heart beat faster, widens the air passages in the lungs, and reverses the widening of the blood vessels caused by immunoglobin E.

Most people who realise they have severe allergy reactions carry a ready-filled adrenaline injector with them at all times.

However, such is the speed with which anaphylactic shock takes hold, even immediate treatment with adrenaline is not guaranteed to save the victim's life.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a virus which can cause fatal liver problems.

Although some modern treatments can control it in some patients, on the whole it remains an infection which is very hard to treat.

The virus is carried in the blood, and people with the infection can pass it on if their blood gets under the skin or into the bloodstream of another person.

Examples of how this might happen include intravenous drug users sharing syringes, or a surgeon with the infection who is cut while carrying out an operation, with the blood getting into the patient's wound.

It can also be passed on through sexual contact but that is very rare. Hepatitis C is not transmitted through normal social contact such as touching, hugging or kissing.

The word hepatitis in general refers to an inflammation of the liver - which can be caused either by the C virus, or by other viruses, drinking too much or even by a condition in which the body's own immune system attacks liver cells.

Symptomless

Drug user
Sharing needles increases infection risks
Some patients - some 20% - manage to get rid of
the hepatitis C virus within six months without ever
suffering the symptoms of the disease.

In the remainder, the virus can remain in the body,
again perhaps not causing any symptoms, for even a period of decades.

However, if the liver inflammation begins to get worse, then symptoms can appear.

These include jaundice, a condition which tells doctors that the liver may not be working properly.

In this the skin turns yellowish, as do the whites of the eyes. It is associated with fatigue.

Other symptoms of hepatitis C include weight loss, alcohol intolerance, vomiting and flu like symptoms.

If severe liver inflammation persists, serious damage may occur.

Tests for hepatitis C

Blood tests may be able to tell doctors if hepatitis C is present. However, as the test is looking for signs that the body's immune system is trying to fight the virus, it may not be positive for a few months after infection.

A doctor may also want to carry out "liver function tests" to see how well the liver is working, or even take a sample of liver tissue - a liver "biopsy" to check for serious damage.

Treatments

Currently, hepatitis C is treated with a combination of two drugs, interferon alpha and ribavirin.

About 40% of patients respond to this "combination" therapy.

In some cases, however, doctors who know a patient has hepatitis C may opt to simply keep an eye on them to check that liver damage is not occurring.

If liver damage is severe, then a transplant may be the only option. The shortage of organs for transplantation is a severe problem - patients may have to wait some time before one becomes available.

Even when the liver is replaced, this does not cure the virus - the virus infects the new liver and will eventually start to damage it in the same way.

The operation simply buys some time and improves the general health of the patient.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder which can have a potentially devastating impact on all aspects of everyday life.
Sufferers demonstrate bizarre behaviour, upsetting both to them and families, colleagues and friends.

OCD is estimated to affect 2-3% of the general population.

What are obsessions and compulsions?

Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses or images that cause marked anxiety or distress. A sufferer recognises the obsessions are the products of his or her mind, and tries to suppress them or to neutralise them with some other thought or action.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or mental acts a sufferer feels driven to perform in response to an obsession in order to reduce distress or prevent a dreaded event or situation. They are either completely inappropriate or clearly excessive.

What sort of compulsions do people suffer from?

Common compulsions are hand washing, ordering, checking, praying, counting, and repeating words silently.

What impact do obsessions and compulsions have on everyday life?

Both obsessions and compulsions can be resisted only with great difficulty and usually only for a short period of time.

They are very distressing, time consuming, and can significantly interfere with work and social patterns and personal relationships.

The disorder is often accompanied by depression and anxiety, as well as by the misuse of substances such as alcohol, in an attempt to self-medicate.

What causes OCD?

There are several theories about the cause of OCD. Current thinking is that the condition is related to low levels of the brain chemical serotonin. It appears OCD may run in some families for genetic reasons. Some specialists believe OCD may afflict people who set unrealistically high personal standards for themselves.

What is the outlook?

Untreated, OCD is usually a lifelong illness with periodic worsening and improvement of symptoms. With treatment, obsessions and compulsions can be reduced or eliminated completely.

What treatment is available?

Treatment usually consists of behaviour therapy and/or medication.

Behaviour therapy helps people reduce the anxiety associated with obsession and reduce or eliminate compulsions. Sufferers are usually encouraged to face feared situations without resorting to compulsive rituals. Other techniques to address specific obsessions or compulsions are sometimes used.

The most successful medications are the serotonergic anti-depressants. Other anti-depressant, anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety drugs are also used.

What can be done to maximise the chances of recovery?

Medication should be taken as prescribed.
Exercise regularly.
Eat a well-balanced diet
Sleep adequately.
Join a self-help group.
Educate yourself and your family about OCD.

Improve Study Skills

Middle school is recognized by most authorities as a crucial period in a student's life. You are at the point where schoolwork is becoming more difficult, and your grades are being counted on your official transcript. These factors alone are formidable, but classwork is also becoming more involved and abstract, and students are being asked to use their brains in ways analytical and intuitive that they may not have yet been called on to develop. Because this period in your life marks your passage into the adult world of practical knowledge, reasoning, and career study, it is important that you cultivate an effective method of learning and reviewing information that allows you to truly understand it. By acknowledging the following factors, you can develop the skills needed to absorb and apply information in class.
Create an appropriate study environment: Many students have a difficult time keeping up with their studies merely because they feel frustrated and uncomfortable when they sit down to begin them. In order to have an encouraging and fruitful experience when studying, you must be in an environment that allows for full concentration.
The first thing that any student appreciates when studying is an open, organized studying surface, such as a large desk or table. A desk with drawers or some plastic tubs that can be stored near the table will allow you to have your resources close by. It is to be stressed that the study area be open--having the space to spread out books and papers will minimize frustration. Furthermore, a focused study environment requires quiet and no distractions. The usual "supplies" that are brought to the study area--a CD player, snack food, etc.--are discouraged. These things break concentration and take time away from studies. The student should know that study time is study time, and should eat before or after--not during--his work. Other factors that create a good study environment are good lighting and comfortable furniture. Studying also requires the correct attitude. Be calm and patient with yourself as you review the material.Class time is when much of learning takes place. Pay attention during class, and don't expect to learn everything later on your own. Some good note-taking strategies are:

Using abbreviations or symbols for commonly used words (e.g. mlcl for molecule, w/ for "with," the Greek letter delta for the concept of change).
Singling out the most important information for the record (main ideas, necessary details).
Using clear headers to organize information.
Drawing pictures or diagrams rather than expressing "visual concepts" in words.
Develop effective memorization methods: While memorization is far from being all you'll need in middle school and high school, it is often called into use.The following is a list of some common study techniques on how to improve your memory:
List: When memorizing dates, formulae, etc., some find useful the most bare method of all--the list. When memorizing the scientific names of different organisms for a biology class, for instance, a student could create two columns side by side--one listing the common names, the other listing the scientific names. By reading the list over several times and then covering up pieces of information so that you are forced to remember them, you can teach your brain to associate the two names more quickly.

Tips For Getting Better Sleep

If you want to know how to go to sleep faster, there are a few things you can start with, even tonight, that will help you to get that sleep you need, and without rolling around twisting the bed covers before that happens.

Don't fall into the trap of waiting until you are sleepy. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make. They feel like since they are going to lie in bed awake they may as well just stay up a little while longer until they are feeling sleepy enough to drop right off.

You can train your body to go to sleep when you go to bed, but you have to go to bed when your sleep time comes.

Oh, and that is the next tip; you should set that "sleep time".

Having a set sleep time will condition your body and mind to prepare for going to sleep. This will also help you to be more productive since having that sleep time as a deadline will also help you to stay focused on your work and get it done before the time is up.

Set that sleep time, and stick to it.

Don't just have your sleep time for school nights or work nights.

Go to bed, and to sleep, at the same time, or as close as possible to it, every night.

Tell yourself as the time is approaching that "I will go to bed and to sleep" at that time.

Use a short routine to prepare yourself for sleep. Something as simple as getting up, changing into your sleep wear, washing your face with warm water, brushing your teeth, and thinking not about the next day, but about what a good sleep is awaiting you, can help you tremendously in getting to sleep faster, and having a better sleep.

When you set that sleep time, remember that your reading or movie/television watching needs to match that schedule as well.

Make sure your sleep wear is comfortable, loose fitting, but not so loose as to cause twisting that can affect your comfort or circulation during your sleep.

Oh, and set your sleep time, and stick to it.

Yes, I know I said that before, but it really is key to making this work for you. If you don't train your body to accept that sleep time means sleep time, you are only re-enforcing to your subconscious mind and conscious mind that you don't really think you are going to bed and to sleep then.

It really is not that difficult to do, and you are not helping yourself by sleeping less, or going to bed later.

Get to bed, and get to sleep. On time, every night.

Breast Cancer Screening Saves Two Lives For Every One Misdiagnosed

Breast cancer screening saves the lives of two women for every one who receives potentially unnecessary treatment, research out today suggests.

Some cancers grow so slowly that a woman may die from another disease first while other cancers would cause no harm.

Experts are currently unable to distinguish between these less harmful cancers and some more aggressive types, meaning they are all routinely treated.

New research has found that for every case of overdiagnosis, two lives are saved as a result of the NHS breast cancer screening programme. The issue has been the subject of debate recently after other studies suggested the programme does little to save lives.

Last week,Danish experts caust doubt on the benefits of mammography, saying there were few differences in death rates between women who are screened and those who are not screened.

The latest research was led by experts from the Wolfson Institute for Preventive Medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

It focused on data from some 80,000 women from the age of 50 and looked at Sweden and England before and after the introduction of screening.

It found 5.7 deaths from breast cancer were prevented for every 1,000 women screened over 20 years in England. The number of estimated cases of overdiagnosis was 2.3 per 1,000 women over the same period.

The authors, writing in the journal of medical council , said: "The benefit of mammographic screening in terms of lives saved is greater in absolute terms than the harm in terms of overdiagnosis.

"Between 2 and 2.5 lives are saved for every overdiagnosed case."

The researchers concluded the "benefits in terms of numbers of deaths prevented are around double the harms in terms of overdiagnosis.

"Analysis of both data sets shows a substantial and significant reduction in breast cancer deaths in association with mammographic screening."

Lead author Stephen Duffy said: "This shows that the benefits of screening outweigh the harms.

"Unfortunately, we haven't yet got a flawless screening test, and some cases that are picked up wouldn't have needed treatment.

"But for every case like this, screening saves two women who would have otherwise died from breast cancer."

More than 45,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK and more than 12,000 die from the disease.

Women aged 50 to 70 are invited for NHS breast screening every three years across the UK. From 2012, this will be extended to include women aged 47 to 73.

Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the study, said: "The national breast screening programme saves lives, so we encourage women to go when invited."

She added: "As well as attending screening, we would encourage all women to be breast-aware and to go to their doctor if they notice any unusual changes to their breasts."

Dr Alexis Willett, head of policy at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "This research provides a compelling argument in favour of breast screening and shows that the benefits outweigh the risks.

"Screening saves lives because it picks up cancer before any symptoms can be seen or felt.

"The earlier cancer is diagnosed the better a woman's chance of a successful outcome."

Arlene Wilkie, director of research and policy at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: "We welcome continued evaluation of the effectiveness of the NHS breast screening programme as we believe it plays a valuable role in the early detection of breast cancer.

"Research has shown that the earlier breast cancer is detected and treated the greater the chances of survival."

Clue To Getting A Good Night's Sleep Discovered

US researchers are a step closer to discovering why some people can sleep peacefully despite the noise of modern life.

A process in the brain plays a key role in blocking out sound during sleep, they say, and it appears to be more effective in certain individuals.

It may be possible to boost this effect using therapy, drugs or electronic devices, says a Harvard team.

The research is published in the journal Current Biology.

US researchers studied 12 healthy volunteers at a sleep clinic over the course of three nights.

The first night was quiet but during the second and third nights, volunteers were confronted with the sounds of telephones ringing, road and air traffic noises and the beep of hospital equipment.

They were monitored each night using an electroencephalograph (EEG), which records the electrical activity of the brain.

The team, led by Dr Jeffrey Ellenbogen of Harvard Medical School, Boston, detected patterns known as sleep spindles which are thought to block out the effects of sound and other sensory information passing through the brain.

Individuals with the highest rates of spindles on the quiet night were less likely to be woken by noises on the second and third nights, and some were not even aware their sleep had been disrupted, he said.

"In recent years, it has been discovered that the sleep spindle is generated by the thalamus," Dr Ellenbogen explained. "And since the thalamus is the gateway of sensory information to the brain, it has been hypothesised that spindles are markers of the blockade of noises during sleep.

"Our study demonstrates this finding in humans, and takes it one step further: one can use the sleep spindle as a biomarker for predicting whether a person will have difficulty in noisy environments or not in the future."

The researchers hope to eventually use this finding to enhance the natural brain rhythm that protects sleep.

"We have a lot of work to do before using this in people, mostly because we want to be absolutely clear that this is safe and effective," said Dr Ellenbogen. "But whether it's next year or next decade, this research will lay the groundwork for brain-based solutions to noisy environments."

Commenting on the study, Dr Chris Idzikowski, Director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre in Scotland, said sleep spindles have always been regarded as the hallmark of sleep but their function has been unclear.

"This is an interesting paper which modestly links sleep spindles with blocking the effects of acoustic stimuli," he said.

Professor Jim Horne of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University added: "Sleep spindles certainly help to block outside noise. There are other interpretations for this study, though, as those people with fewer spindles may simply be 'lighter sleepers' and more likely to wake up with the noise - hence less sleep and fewer spindles."

New Brain Scan To Diagnose Autism

A brain scan that detects autism in adults could mean much more straightforward diagnosis of the condition, scientists say.

Experts at King's College London said the scan - tested on 40 people - identified tiny but crucial signs of autism, only detectable by computer.

Current methods of diagnosis can be lengthy and expensive.

But some experts say further research will be needed before the new technique can be widely used.

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects an estimated 1 in every 100 adults in the UK, most of them men. It varies from mild to very severe, and people with the condition can find the world appears chaotic and hard to understand.

Conventional diagnosis involves a team of experts who analyse behaviour and make a complex series of assessments.

The Medical Research Council study looked at 20 non-autistic adults and 20 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

They were initially diagnosed using traditional methods, and then given a 15 minute brain MRI scan. The images were reconstructed into 3D and were fed into a computer, which looked for tiny but significant differences.

The researchers detected autism with over 90% accuracy, the Journal of Neuroscience reports.

"What the computer can do very quickly is to see that a patient has autism," said Professor Declan Murphy from the Institute of Psychiatry, who supervised the research, "even though their brain, to the naked eye, looks very normal."

Dr Christine Ecker, who led the study, said she hoped the findings might result in a widely available scan to test for autism.

"It could help to alleviate the need for the emotional, time consuming and expensive diagnostic process which ASD patients and families currently have to endure," she said.

Once a patient has a diagnosis, he or she is able to access help and support with managing the condition.

Visible confirmation
Joe Powell was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, 14 years ago. Before his diagnosis, he didn't speak at all.

Since then, he says he's made big progress in managing his condition.

His brain scan confirms his ASD. He says seeing his diagnosis charted in black and white made a big difference to him.

"You need to physically see it," he says.

"I know the autism is still there. The progress I've made in managing my condition is real, but it's still there."

The research team is now looking at whether the test would be effective on children.

The findings have been welcomed by the National Autistic Society, who say they add to the understanding of the condition. They say adults can find it very difficult to get a diagnosis of autism, and this may help.

However, they say without more awareness among doctors, it may be of limited use.

"There's still a woeful lack of awareness in GPs' knowledge of autism," said NAS centre director, Carol Povey.

"People with autism are often dismissed when they go to their GPs for help, so we have to make sure front-line professionals have awareness of autism so they can make appropriate referrals."

Professor Uta Frith from UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, said much more work would be needed before the scans could be used for diagnosis. "This study shows that the subtle brain abnormalities associated with autism show a distinctive pattern," she said. "It is crucial that we learn more about what the brain abnormalities mean."
